SYC Pajama Christmas Party

And who says wearing PJ's to a party can't be fun? Close to 80 members and guests donned their finest holiday sleepwear and gathered to celebrate the season at the "PJ" themed SYC Christmas party on December 2nd at the home of Jeff and Lynette.

A traditional Mexican Christmas dinner was provided starting with home-made salsa, guacamole and a Mexican jicama snack followed by tamales, Spanish rice, frijoles and salad. Dessert consisting of flan and Mexican wedding cookies rounded out the evening. A special shout out to Carmen and Tim for recipes and help with all of the fresh sides and desserts.


Fine Dining in the Silver Reef Ballroom

The 2017 SYC Commodore’s Ball took place on November 11 in the main ballroom at the Silver Reef Hotel in Ferndale. The evening was flawless thanks to the organizational skills of Rear Commodore Laura, ably assisted by the decorating committee consisting of Olivier B, Leslie C, Lynette M-R, with help also from Michelle F and Steve M. The committee made the most of the theme “A Rainbow of Possibilities” that was appreciated by the more than 90 members and guests in attendance. Dinner was served in a timely manner thanks to the Silver Reef staff, and was accompanied by the music of the Atlantics.

The annual Salmon Derby took place September 15-17 at Roche Harbor and was enjoyed by members of both Semiahmoo and Birch Bay Village Yacht Clubs! Attendance was great, with 11 boats and a large number of anglers and guests. The fishing derby was a boatload of fun; although catching legal-size fish was a challenge.

The 1st place winner was Chris G (SYC), fishing aboard the Haida II, who caught a King just under 20 pounds. The 2nd place winner was Jim P (BBVYC) fishing aboard Beoma's dinghy, who caught a 10+ pound King. Sadly, Jim had caught a 22+ pound King in practice the day before the derby! It was also reported that some of the participants had difficulty with fish identification and may have kept some COHO.


SYC at Victoria Symphony Splash

An enthusiastic group of 12 boats turned out for the 2017 cruise to the Symphony Splash in Victoria on the August 4-7 long weekend. A few boats met up beforehand to anchor out in Garrison Bay and cruisers enjoyed a potluck dinner aboard Bacalao. Thanks to Debby and Paul of the Mary D for coordinating the anchor out.

After arriving at the Causeway Marina on Friday, everyone enjoyed a great spread of heavy appetizers. The smiles on the happy eaters tell all! Co-hosts Katherine and Martin (Bacalao) and Peter & Colleen (Avalon) coordinated a number of meals including breakfast on all three mornings and a club sponsored dinner of ham and baked beans with potluck sides contributed by cruisers. Special thanks to Helen (Bud's Tug) for the contribution of Pacific Foods baked beans.


Retrieving the Roasted Pig

This year the ever popular SYC Pig Roast returned to the beautiful home of Dick and Colleen Hardman at Silva Bay, BC. This is the 7th year that Dick and Colleen have so generously hosted this SYC event at their lovely Gabriola Island home.

Thirty-four boats made their way to Silva Bay in pretty acceptable weather and sea conditions. We even had members (Ed & Marion) arrive by seaplane! In all, 69 members and 16 guests attended the Pig Roast this year.
